The anime is based on a popular novel that surpassed 300 million page views on the user-generated fiction site "Shōsetsuka ni Narō." The story follows Naofumi Iwatani, an ordinary otaku college student who is suddenly summoned to another world. There, he is chosen as the Shield Hero—one of the Four Cardinal Heroes alongside the Sword, Spear, and Bow Heroes—tasked with defending the world from waves of catastrophic destruction. However, after being betrayed by his companions, he loses everything—his money, status, and trust—and must rise from the depths of despair. The TV anime first aired in 2019, followed by Season 2 in 2022 and Season 3 in 2023.
