[Movie] GHOST IN THE SHELL: Atsuko Tanaka's Iconic Role Re-Released in 4K in Shibuya
In honor of the late voice actress Atsuko Tanaka, who passed away on August 20th, one of her most iconic roles in the anime film GHOST IN THE SHELL (1995), directed by Mamoru Oshii, will be re-released for a limited one-week screening at Shibuya White Cine Quint starting this week on the 6th.
The film will be presented in its 4K remastered version, which was initially released in September 2021. Ticket prices are set at a flat rate of 1,500 yen, with no discounts or complimentary tickets accepted.
In this film, Tanaka voices the protagonist Motoko Kusanagi. The story is set in the year 2029, where a highly advanced network society is plagued by computer crimes and cyber-terrorism. To combat these threats, the government forms "Section 9" (aka "GHOST IN THE SHELL"), an unorthodox and unapproved special forces unit. The film is an adaptation of Masamune Shirow's cyberpunk manga GHOST IN THE SHELL.
The movie gained significant international acclaim, including topping the U.S. Billboard video charts, and is credited with bringing Oshii's name to global prominence.
