"Frieren: Beyond Journey's End" Season 2 Announced, Teaser Video Released! The Story Continues from Chapter 61, Air Date to be Announced Later

The production of Season 2 of the TV anime Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has been confirmed. The announcement was made today, September 28th, at a special event held in Tokyo to celebrate the first anniversary of the anime's premiere. The event, titled First Anniversary Special Screening of "Frieren: Beyond Journey's End", was met with enthusiastic applause from both the cast and the audience. The air date for the new season will be announced at a later time.

The first season of the anime covered the story up to the First-Class Mage Exam Arc, where Frieren undergoes a fierce battle to earn the qualifications of a “First-Class Mage,” a necessary step to reach her ultimate destination, the Land Where Souls Rest (Aureole). Season 2 will pick up from Chapter 61, featured in Volume 7 of the original manga. Animation production will once again be handled by Madhouse, continuing from the first season.

The new story will begin where Season 1 left off, following Frieren, her apprentice Fern, who has obtained the First-Class Mage qualification, and the warrior Stark, as they resume their journey from the land of Oisirs, the site of the First-Class Mage Exam.

The teaser visual that was released shows a quiet, serene scene with Frieren’s bag, Fern’s staff, and Stark’s axe placed under the shade of a tree, accompanied by the shadows of the three characters. The peaceful imagery hints at the beginning of a new journey for the trio. In the announcement video, fans could hear a newly recorded voice line from Frieren, played by Atsumi Tanezaki, saying, “Shall we begin the next part of the journey?”

In addition, celebratory comments and illustrations were received from the manga’s original creators, Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe. In a joint statement, they expressed their gratitude: “Season 2 of the TV anime has been officially decided! This is all thanks to the tremendous support from our fans. We also extend our deepest thanks to everyone involved in creating this fantastic anime. As viewers ourselves, we look forward to witnessing Frieren’s journey as it continues. Please keep supporting Frieren: Beyond Journey's End.”

The screening event featured the main cast, including Atsumi Tanezaki (as Frieren), Nobuhiko Okamoto (as Himmel), Kana Ichinose (as Fern), Chiharu Kobayashi (as Stark), Hiroki Tōchi (as Heiter), and Yōji Ueda (as Eisen). When the announcement of Season 2 was made, the audience erupted in applause, and the cast collectively shouted, “We did it!”

Tanezaki jumped for joy, exclaiming, “I’m so happy!!” Okamoto added with excitement, “I’ve been waiting, wondering when it would happen! I can’t wait for the recording schedule to be set (laughs).” Ichinose expressed her anticipation by saying, “I’m looking forward to continuing the adventure as Fern,” while Kobayashi smiled and said, “I’m full of excitement, wondering how they’ll keep up the quality from Season 1.”

Tochi humorously remarked, “Since my character has passed away… (laughs), please look forward to Season 2!” Ueda added, “The fact that there’s such a strong response leading to Season 2 gives me chills of excitement.”

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is based on the manga of the same name, which has been serialized in Weekly Shōnen Sunday since April 2020. The story is a post-epic fantasy, depicting the events following the defeat of the Demon King by the hero’s party. The elf mage Frieren embarks on a new adventure in a world without the hero, accompanied by new comrades.

The unique setting, which unfolds after the “Demon King’s defeat,” coupled with its emotional drama, magical and sword-based battles, and humorous moments, has captivated many readers. It won the Manga Taisho Award 2021, and the manga’s cumulative sales have surpassed 22 million copies. The TV anime aired from September 2023 to March 2024.
