About Mazinger Z & Go Nagai

■Mazinger Z
'Mazinger Z' first appeared in "Weekly Shonen Jump" in 1972, laying the foundation for the giant robot genre by telling the story of a protagonist piloting a massive robot to fight evil forces. The series gained tremendous popularity not only through manga and animation but also with character toys, establishing a foundational market that would influence later series like 'Getter Robo' and 'Mobile Suit Gundam.'

■Go Nagai
Born: September 6, 1945
Hometown: Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan

Go Nagai made his debut in 1967 with Meakashi Polikichi (published in Bokura magazine). In 1968, he began serializing Harenchi Gakuen in Weekly Shonen Jump, which became a societal phenomenon. In 1972, while working on plans for a TV anime adaptation, he simultaneously serialized Devilman in Weekly Shonen Magazine and Mazinger Z in Weekly Shonen Jump. In 1973, he serialized Cutie Honey in Weekly Shonen Champion.
Spanning genres from gag comedy to dark fantasy, sci-fi, and horror, Nagai's works showcase incredible diversity. As of 2024, he continues to publish serialized works. In 2019, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Chevalier) by the French government.

Artworks by Go Nagai Under Dynamic Production's Supervision

For this exhibit, letterpress artworks of 'Mazinger Z' have been crafted under the supervision of Go Nagai and Dynamic Production. Using zinc plates and metal type that were once utilized in the 1970s "Weekly Shonen Jump," the original letterpress process has been revived and printed on high-quality, 100% cotton paper. Moreover, photographs of the plates were made into collotype prints, resulting in unique compositions being revealed for the first time.

The exhibition also features color prints produced using archival inkjet printing techniques. These works come in two sizes—original drawing size and A1 size—to vividly recreate the world of 'Mazinger Z.'

Takahiro Koga's New Ceramic Piece 'Cheek Guard Cup: Ultimate Mechanical Demon Form'

Another highlight is a new work by ceramic artist Takahiro Koga, titled "Cheek Guard Cup: Ultimate Mechanical Demon Form." Inspired by the elements of 'Mazinger Z' and incorporating motifs from traditional samurai cheek guards, this piece is a unique and practical tea vessel, blending traditional and contemporary art forms.
