Cannes Selection for a Uniquely Japanese Mystery
The Midnight Screening section has previously featured high-profile genre films such as Train to Busan (2017) and Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In (2024), both of which gained international acclaim. This inclusion places Exit 8 among some of the most talked-about cinematic thrillers in recent years.
The 78th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 13–24 in France, with Juliette Binoche serving as jury president. Cannes remains one of the “Big Three” film festivals alongside Venice and Berlin.
Exit 8 starring Kazunari Ninomiya opens in Japan on August 29.
Comments from the Team Behind Exit 8
🎬 Kazunari Ninomiya (Lead Actor)
“When director Kawamura called, I thought, ‘Wait, are we re-recording the dubbing!?’, but then he shouted, ‘Nino! We made it to Cannes!’ It was the most amazing surprise.
We were both thrilled—‘It’s Official Selection! It’s Midnight Screening! This is huge!!’
Of course, a film only truly comes to life once it’s seen by audiences, but Cannes is one of those places every filmmaker dreams of standing on.
I’ve been part of this project since the very beginning, and I hope it reaches as many people as possible.
To everyone involved—congratulations!”
🎥 Genki Kawamura (Director & Screenwriter)
“The fact that this mysterious Japanese film about underground passageways is heading to the global stage at Cannes… it’s an anomaly I still can’t fully believe.
My deepest thanks to KOTAKE CREATE, who created this beautifully terrifying game; Ninomiya-san and Yamato Kawachi, who braved daily loop shoots; and our talented staff.
Together, we’re stepping through the ‘entrance’ to the world.”
🎮 KOTAKE CREATE (Original Game Creator)
“I never dreamed the game I made would be adapted into a film—let alone go to Cannes.
I hope this brings Exit 8 to more people around the world. Congratulations to director Kawamura, Ninomiya-san, Kawachi-san, and everyone involved!”
