The 45th volume of the manga Space Brothers (JP: 宇宙兄弟, Uchuu Kyoudai) was released on July 23 in Japan. Alongside the release, it was officially announced on the promotional band that the next volume—Volume 46—will be the final installment. Although the release date for the concluding volume has not yet been determined, this will mark the end of an 18-year serialization that began in 2007.

Space Brothers, created by Chuya Koyama, began its run in Kodansha’s Morning magazine in December 2007. The story centers around two brothers, Mutta and Hibito, who made a childhood promise under the stars to become astronauts. By 2025, the younger brother Hibito has fulfilled that promise and become a member of the first long-term lunar crew. Meanwhile, Mutta, having lost his job and living unemployed, is inspired to pursue space again after receiving a single email from his brother.

The manga was both a critical and commercial success, winning the 56th Shogakukan Manga Award (General category) and the 35th Kodansha Manga Award (General category) in 2011. It also received an anime adaptation that aired from 2012 to 2014.

Comment from Author Chuya Koyama

Volume 45 of Space Brothers is out now! Thank you all for waiting. As always, if you re-read the previous 44 volumes before diving into this one, I think you’ll enjoy the experience even more. And I’ll probably say the same thing again about the next one. The next volume will be the final one… I think. Just a little more to go until the end. Please enjoy Volume 45 as well.
