Legendary Japanese Racehorse Grass Wonder Dies at 30; ‘Uma Musume’ Official Pays Tribute
Grass Wonder, the legendary racehorse who won Japan’s most prestigious G1 race, the Arima Kinen, in 1998 and 1999, has died at the age of 30. The announcement was made on August 8, and in response, the popular multimedia franchise Uma Musume Pretty Derby updated its official X account to pay tribute.

Grass Wonder was a remarkable horse who claimed victory in the GI Asahi Hai Sansai Stakes (1997), Arima Kinen (1998, 1999), and the Takarazuka Kinen (1999). He was known for his fierce rivalry with his contemporary Special Week, a story arc that was also portrayed in the first season of the Uma Musume anime.
In its official statement, Uma Musume said:
“On August 8, we received news of the passing of Grass Wonder, the racehorse who served as the motif for a character in our work. We extend our condolences to those connected to him and sincerely pray for the repose of this great champion.”
