[Editor's Picks] Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo Runs for Six Months with 3 Volumes: Set 68 Years Later with Sci-Fi Elements

Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo (JP: 呪術廻戦≡) was revealed to be a Jujutsu Kaisen Official spin-off in a surprise announcement.

The short-term serialization based on Gege Akutami's original work had been announced, but details were officially revealed on the release date of Weekly Shonen Jump (September 8, 2025, 00:00 JST). My mind was racing even before I wrote the article. Is it a continuation of Jujutsu Kaisen? Or is it a prequel set in the Heian period or something?

Please note that the content beyond this point contains spoilers.

I was flipping through the opening color pages of Jump... Huh? Aliens?? Is this sci-fi? I bet a lot of people felt a bit uneasy at this opening scene.

But that feeling quickly went away.

The story takes place in 2086, 68 years after the events of Jujutsu Kaisen, and the main character is Yuta Okkotsu's granddaughter, Yuka Okkotsu. Yuji Iwasaki did the illustrations, but he kept the same style as Gege Akutami, so it still feels like the original.

The black-and-white pages show Yuka, who gets a ring (Rika's engagement ring) from someone who looks like Yuta. But then the Gojo family stepped in and took the ring from her, giving it to her brother, Tsurugi Okkotsu. This started a rivalry between the two siblings.

Yuka looks a lot like Yuta, and Tsurugi is just like Maki Zenin. Tsurugi doesn't have any cursed energy; he uses cursed tools and the Shinkage style of swordsmanship instead.

Both characters had already shown up in the epilogue that was included in the last volume of Jujutsu Kaisen, which is set in 2080. Even though their relationship seemed fine in that epilogue, the events of Modulo show growing conflict, suggesting small changes in continuity.

nother central figure is Maru, an alien whose job is to figure out if humans and aliens can get along. At first, it might feel like he doesn't fit into Jujutsu Kaisen's world, but his attitude and lines fit right into the story.

Since the story takes place during the lifetimes of some of the original characters, we might see familiar faces again (at the very least Panda).

Gege Akutami shared on Jujutsu Kaisen’s official X account that the spinoff will run for six months and wrap up in three compiled volumes. As both an editor and a longtime fan, I can’t help but feel excited. It sounds like just the right length for a tight, memorable story arc.

(English Translation)

This is Akutami. It has been a while.

During the serialization of Jujutsu Kaisen (hereafter, “Jujutsu”), I had received offers for spinoffs written by someone other than myself. However, since manga is a medium where the use of the series’ name can quickly spiral out of my control, I was too anxious at the time to accept those offers.

That said, those proposals became a springboard for many ideas: what if we expanded on this part of the main story, pursued this setting further, changed the time period, or even made it parallel? Among them, the idea that was the most outlandish at the concept stage, Modulo, ultimately went through editorial discussions and has now been realized.

This will be a short-term serialization, running for about six months (unless it gets cut short), and will likely amount to three volumes. The artwork is by none other than Yuji Iwasaki. It is amazing, it is skillful, it is beautiful.

I would be delighted if you could enjoy Modulo as a new gateway into the world of Jujutsu.
