Marking their first face-to-face meeting since collaborating on the TV series three years ago, the discussion revealed mutual admiration. Yonezu, a longtime fan of Fujimoto’s works, reflected:

“I wanted to be a manga artist myself when I was a child, so seeing someone close to my age create something this impactful has been incredibly inspiring. Even though music and manga are different fields, I felt I couldn’t afford to fall behind—it really motivated me to keep pushing myself.”

Fujimoto, who has been a fan of Yonezu’s music since his student days, spoke about Yonezu’s songs:

“Yonezu’s music is easy for listeners to grasp, and I think many of his songs serve as guiding lines for the works they accompany. When ‘Chainsaw Man’ was getting its opening theme, I worried it might become too explanatory, but Yonezu is excellent at picking up the right elements. He balanced it perfectly, adding a carefree touch to ‘KICK BACK,’ making it such a great song.”

In the latter half of the dialogue, the two creators delved into behind-the-scenes stories of the film’s theme song “IRIS OUT” and the ending theme “JANE DOE” by Yonezu and Hikaru Utada. They also explored Fujimoto’s perspective on the character Reze, the books, films, and manga that influenced him as a child, and how each craftsman builds their own world. The talk revealed not only professional insights but also the kinship and shared sensibilities of two creators from the same generation.

The full, exclusive conversation filled with rare insights is now available on MAPPA’s official YouTube channel.

About Chainsaw Man

Based on Tatsuki Fujimoto’s popular manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since December 2018, Chainsaw Man follows Denji, a destitute boy burdened with his late father’s debts. After merging with his loyal devil companion Pochita, Denji is reborn as Chainsaw Man, wielding the heart of a devil to fight against others in a dark hero action story. The manga has surpassed 30 million copies in circulation and was ranked No.1 in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2021 Male Readers category.

The first part, known as the “Public Safety Arc,” concluded in December 2020 in Weekly Shonen Jump. The second part began serialization on Shonen Jump+ in July 2022, followed by a TV anime broadcast from October to December 2022 and even a stage play adaptation.

The new film adapts the highly anticipated Reze Arc, directly continuing from the anime’s final episode. The story depicts Denji’s chance encounter with the enigmatic girl Reze, who entangles him in an unpredictable and perilous fate.
