Episode 29 Story

In Japan’s food warehouse, Hokkaido, a manga artist toiled daily, covered in mud, to save people from hunger. That person’s name was the farmer Arakawa! Kicking off the 3rd Season is none other than a story about cows, because Hyakusho Kizoku means cows, and cows mean Hyakusho Kizoku! This episode focuses on the theme of “raising cows,” and of course, that “certain something” makes an appearance too: “This isn’t a cowshed, it’s my house!”

“What’s common sense for farmers is nonsense to the rest of society.”

Before becoming a manga artist, Hiromu Arakawa spent seven years working on her family’s dairy farm and fields in Hokkaido. Her daily life was a grueling one. Working year-round without a break, tending to cattle, growing vegetables, living in fear of bears, and being at the mercy of Hokkaido’s native chipmunks.

While capturing the harsh realities of Japanese dairy and agriculture, this work also shines a light on the sweat, laughter, and sheer vitality of the hardworking adults (and sometimes children) who give it their all. Bear witness to their powerful and inspiring way of life!
