Overview of Naoya Zenin

Naoya is the son of Naobito Zen’in, the 26th head of the Zen’in Clan, and a cousin to Toji, Maki, and Mai Zen’in. He is a young man with sharp, narrow eyes and bleached blond hair, usually seen wearing a faint smirk. He speaks in a Kansai dialect, typical of Japan’s Kyoto region.

Although his hair is dyed blond, he originally had black hair inherited from the Zen’in bloodline.

Appearance and Personality

Naoya is characterized by his blond hair and sharp, upturned eyes, and is often described in magazines and official materials as handsome. He typically wears a faint, knowing smirk and speaks in the Kyoto dialect. Compared to the more energetic and blunt Osaka dialect, Kyoto speech is generally perceived as refined and polite. However, despite this elegant manner of speaking and his composed appearance, Naoya frequently delivers biting and harsh remarks, creating a striking contrast between his outward refinement and his abrasive personality. As the scion of one of the jujutsu world’s three great families, he was raised in a strictly disciplined and privileged environment, a background reflected in his meticulous appearance—such as buttoning his shirt all the way to the collar.

While his blond hair and piercings give him a Westernized, almost European look, his facial features and clothing remain distinctly Japanese. In fact, his overall appearance can be described as a fusion of Western elements and traditional Japanese aesthetics. Notably, he had black hair during his childhood, consistent with the Zen’in bloodline.

Naoya’s personality is deeply problematic. He frequently makes remarks that demean women, openly embracing misogynistic and patriarchal values. His disdain is not limited to women, however; he also looks down on men he considers weak or unattractive, revealing a strong tendency toward lookism. His contempt extends even to his own older brothers, whom he regards as inferior, demonstrating that his harshness is directed toward anyone he perceives as beneath him.

He is particularly unforgiving toward the weak, while relentlessly striving to place himself among the strong. Driven by intense ambition and pride, he constantly seeks greater power and status. In this regard, he harbors a deep admiration for Toji Fushiguro, whose overwhelming strength relied purely on physical prowess rather than cursed energy.

Naoya possesses an extremely high level of pride, bordering on obsession. He takes pleasure in deliberately saying things he knows will upset others, and he has shown sadistic tendencies, such as venting his frustration through acts of violence against Maki Zen’in.

Naoya Zenin's Abilities

■Projection Sorcery
Like his father Naobito, Naoya inherited the Zen’in family’s signature technique. By envisioning his field of view as a camera frame, he divides one second of movement into 24 frames in his mind, then reproduces those motions with his own body. Once the motion is successfully constructed, the tracing proceeds automatically.

However, if he fails to complete the motion, or if his movement violates physical laws or realistic trajectories, his body freezes for one full second, leaving him completely immobilized.

Naoya holds deeply misogynistic beliefs, often looking down on women, and maintains a worldview rooted in male superiority. He is equally disdainful of men he deems weak, constantly striving to align himself with those he considers strong. He holds great admiration for Toji Fushiguro and aspires to embody the same kind of strength.

Naoya Zenin’s Key Relationships

Maki Zenin

■Maki Zenin

Naoya Zen’in constantly despised and belittled his cousin, Maki Zen’in. As a woman born without cursed energy yet aiming to become the head of the Zen’in Clan, Maki’s determination directly clashed with Naoya’s deep-rooted misogyny and his rigid belief in a hierarchy based on cursed technique power.

At the core of his resentment lies an inferiority complex toward Toji Fushiguro, whom he idolized. Maki, like Toji, was a physical gifted sorcerer born without cursed energy, making her the closest being to the man Naoya both feared and admired. This twisted admiration fueled his cruelty toward her, from bullying Maki during their childhood to an obsessive fixation after she left the clan.

After Naobito’s death, Naoya assumed he would naturally become the next head of the Zen’in Clan. However, when Naobito’s will designated Megumi Fushiguro as the successor, Naoya furiously rejected the decision. Seeking to eliminate Megumi, he tracked his whereabouts and appeared in Tokyo, confronting Choso and Yuji Itadori as they were exorcising curses.

Trivia & Reception

“Lovable Scum” Reputation
Despite his overt misogyny and extreme arrogance, Naoya has developed a paradoxical popularity among fans. He is often labeled a “Trash Elite” or “Lovable Scum,” reflecting the contrast between his elite status and deeply unpleasant personality. Fans have also adopted the nickname “Dobukasu” (literally “sewage scum”), a derogatory term he himself once used, turning it into an ironic badge of affection. His unwavering, unapologetic villainy—never softened or redeemed—has been widely described by readers as “refreshing” in an era where many antagonists are gradually humanized.

Remarkable Popularity Rankings
Naoya’s popularity is clearly reflected in the official Jujutsu Kaisen character polls. He placed 10th in the second popularity poll, rose to 6th in the third, and reached 5th place in the fourth and final poll with 11,731 votes. Notably, this ranking surpassed several major characters, including Yuta Okkotsu and even Toji Fushiguro, the figure Naoya himself admired.

Voice Actor and Resemblance to Gin Ichimaru
In the anime adaptation, Naoya is voiced by Koji Yusa. Long before the official casting announcement, many fans had already predicted Yusa’s involvement, citing strong similarities between Naoya and Gin Ichimaru from BLEACH—a series creator Gege Akutami is known to admire. Shared traits include light-colored hair, narrow eyes, a constant smirk, and the use of a refined Kansai (Kyoto) dialect, making the casting widely regarded as an exceptionally fitting choice.

Famous Quotes and Internet Memes
Naoya has become the source of numerous internet memes. His line, Don't you have a human heart? (人のこころとかないんか? , Hito no kokoro toka nain ka?), delivered hypocritically while belittling others, gained particular notoriety among fans. Overseas audiences have also coined the nickname “CEO of Misogyny,” a satirical title reflecting his consistently contemptuous attitude toward women throughout the series.
