About Demon Slayer and Its Expanding Franchise
Demon Slayer is based on the manga serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump from February 2016 to May 2020. Set in Taisho era Japan, the story follows Tanjiro Kamado, a boy whose family is slaughtered by demons. After his sister Nezuko is turned into a demon, Tanjiro joins the Demon Slayer Corps in hopes of restoring her humanity and defeating the demon responsible for his family’s death. The manga has surpassed 220 million copies in circulation worldwide.
The television anime adaptation, Tanjiro Kamado Unwavering Resolve Arc, aired from April to September 2019 and quickly became a major hit. This was followed by the theatrical release of Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie Mugen Train in October 2020, which went on to earn approximately 51.7 billion yen at the global box office, becoming a cultural phenomenon.
Since then, the franchise has continued to grow through games and stage adaptations, as well as subsequent anime arcs including the Entertainment District Arc in December 2021, the Swordsmith Village Arc in April 2023, and the Hashira Training Arc broadcast from May to June 2024. The Infinity Castle storyline is currently being adapted into a trilogy of theatrical films, beginning with Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle Arc Chapter One Akaza Returns, which depicts the final battle between the Demon Slayer Corps, Muzan Kibutsuji, and the Upper Rank demons inside the Infinity Castle.
