Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising Set for August 28 Release After Multiple Delays

The new Puella Magi Madoka Magica film has officially set a new release date. Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising (JP: 劇場版 魔法少女まどか☆マギカ ワルプルギスの廻天), which had previously been postponed multiple times, is now scheduled to open in theaters on August 28, 2026. The film was originally planned for winter 2024, later postponed to winter 2025, and then rescheduled for February 2026. However, on January 23, 2026, the official account announced that the release timing would be changed again due to production related circumstances.

Official Announcement Confirms August 28 Premiere

The franchise official X account stated that after readjusting the release schedule, the film’s new opening date has been confirmed as August 28, 2026. The statement also expressed sincere gratitude to fans who have been patiently waiting and asked them to wait a little longer until the release.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Walpurgisnacht Rising is being produced as the direct sequel to the 2013 theatrical film Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie: Rebellion. Due to production circumstances, the film’s release had already shifted from its initial winter 2024 schedule to winter 2025, and later to February 2026, before being postponed once again in January 2026.

Because the new installment was expected to mark the franchise’s first new theatrical release in 12 years and four months since Rebellion premiered in October 2013, the repeated delays had sparked frustration online. Fans expressed disappointment with comments such as believing another delay was inevitable, wishing the announcement had come sooner, and wanting clearer explanations for the changes.
