Encouraged by Kai’s words, she enrolls in art university and sets out on the path of filmmaking.

The manga was serialized in Monthly Mystery Bonita by Akita Shoten from 2020 to 2025. It won first place in the women’s category of Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2022.

Teaser Visual and Footage Revealed

The newly released teaser and anime film announcement visual show Umiko standing on a beach at sunrise, holding a camera toward the sea without caring that her clothes are getting dirty.

The narration says, “May your baggage be light. May the sea ahead be rich and beautiful. May you be blessed by the wind and move forward, forward.”

The footage conveys the irreplaceable value of devoting oneself wholeheartedly to something.

Comments from the Director and Original Creator

■Full Comment from Director Taichi Ishidate

I am Taichi Ishidate of Kyoto Animation, and I will serve as director of the theatrical anime film Credits Roll Into the Sea.

The original work is a manga. When I first read it, I finished the book thinking, “What a gentle work this is.” In adapting it into animation, I wanted to create a film that would allow viewers to feel that impression even more strongly.

This work tells the story of a 65 year old woman challenging herself to make a film for the first time. In other words, it is a story about a protagonist facing creation. I believe that creating something also means facing oneself through that creation.

Through creation, one confronts questions such as what one wants to convey, what one wants to express, and whether one can be satisfied. Involving oneself and others, it also means facing the fundamental question of who one is. This act of facing oneself is not limited to filmmaking. I believe it applies to everyone who is taking on a challenge.

I want to face creation myself with everything I have so that this becomes a gentle work, one that allows viewers to feel the effort and soul of people who earnestly confront something, as well as their pride and preciousness.

When this film is released, I would be grateful if you would watch it in theaters. Thank you very much.

This is a major announcement timed with the release of the final volume. An anime film adaptation produced by Kyoto Animation has been confirmed. It feels like a dream.

If I told my student self, who was completely absorbed in watching Kyoto Animation’s works, I do not think I would have believed it.

Have you seen the super teaser footage? I feel deeply moved that Umiko herself is being projected onto the screen she longed for.

Thank you very much.
