Onimusha: Way of the Sword Launches September 25, Demo Now Available Featuring the Opening Chapter

Onimusha: Way of the Sword is set to launch on September 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Capcom also announced that a playable demo, allowing players to experience the opening portion of the story, is available starting today.

Onimusha Returns With a New Mainline Entry

First released in 2001, the Onimusha series is set during Japan's Sengoku period and follows the battles between the Onimusha, young warriors granted supernatural demonic power, and the monstrous Genma, creatures seeking world domination.

The franchise became known for its satisfying swordplay, particularly the signature Issen counterattack system, which delivers fast paced and rewarding combat. The series also gained popularity through its blend of historical realism inspired by actual figures and events, dark fantasy elements, eerie atmospheres, and dramatic stories centered on fate and destiny.

Over the years, the franchise has expanded through various media projects, including a Netflix original animated series, and has surpassed 8.7 million copies sold worldwide.

The newly released demo allows players to experience the opening section of Onimusha: Way of the Sword ahead of its full release.

A Dark Fantasy Set in a Twisted Kyoto

As the first completely new entry in the Onimusha series, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is described as a supreme sword action game where blood soaked battles unfold one after another.

The story takes place in Kyoto during the early Edo period, transformed into a mysterious and unsettling land by a corrupting miasma. Players will explore haunting locations filled with supernatural threats while facing the grotesque Genma, monstrous beings that do not belong to this world.

At the center of the story is a lone samurai who wears the Oni Gauntlet. As he cuts through hordes of Genma across Kyoto, he becomes entangled in a dark fantasy tale shaped by the lives of those who inhabit this cursed land.

Amid relentless sword fights and blood drenched battles, the samurai must confront a fundamental question: Why does he fight? The answer awaits at the end of the path he chooses.
