Chiikawa the Movie Becomes a Major Hit With Over $42.8 Million, 7 New Scene Stills Reveal Mysterious Moments

Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of Mermaid Island has released seven new scene stills to celebrate its major box office success. The images include mysterious moments involving the Siren and other scenes from the film.

The movie, which opened in Japan on July 24, surpassed approximately $42.85 million (¥6.77 billion) in box office revenue and drew more than 4.69 million moviegoers during its first 17 days in theaters, through August 9.

Chiikawa's Popular Siren Arc Comes to the Big Screen

The film is based on a feature length story written by Nagano specifically for the movie, known as the Siren Arc. The story follows Chiikawa and friends after they receive an invitation to a "special island" and head there for an island training camp.

The Siren Arc repeatedly became a trending topic on social media as its chapters were released, becoming one of the most popular stories in the series. The long awaited adaptation brings Chiikawa and the others' adventure to the screen under the complete supervision of Nagano.

Chiikawa is based on a manga posted on X by illustrator Nagano. The series began in 2020 and has gained widespread popularity among both adults and children through the contrast between its small, adorable characters and its surprisingly harsh world.

The franchise has won the Grand Prix at the Japan Character Awards, and its television anime has been airing since April 2022.
