HUNTER x HUNTER Next Chapter Date Undecided as Manga Surpasses 100 Million Copies in Circulation
HUNTER x HUNTER’s latest installment, Chapter 420, appeared in the issue of Weekly Shonen Jump released on September 7, 2026. A notice on the final page stated, “The next publication date will be announced in this magazine once it has been decided.”

The manga appeared in the issue released on June 29 for the first time in approximately a year and a half, beginning with Chapter 411. Ten chapters have since been published, through Chapter 420 on September 7.
Creator Yoshihiro Togashi regularly shares updates on his manuscript progress through his official X account. On September 1, he posted, “No. 427, manuscript complete,” reporting that manuscripts had been completed through Chapter 427.

Series Surpasses 100 Million Copies in Circulation
First serialized in 1998, HUNTER x HUNTER is an adventure fantasy following a boy named Gon as he sets out on a journey with his best friend Killua and other companions. The current Dark Continent arc, also described as the royal succession storyline, depicts the clashing agendas of Kurapika, members of the Phantom Troupe and other characters aboard a ship bound for an unexplored continent.
The series surpassed 100 million copies in circulation, including digital editions, with the release of its latest collected volume, Volume 39, on July 3.
Togashi’s Back Pain and the Change in Publication Format
Togashi’s back pain has affected the manga’s publication schedule. In a comment issued in connection with his exhibition in 2022, he explained how his condition had affected his work:
“I imagine people are thinking, ‘Just draw the rest of the story already.’ It is true that I was unable to sit in a chair for about two years and could not draw, but by giving up my previous way of working, I have somehow managed to start drawing again. Everyone, please take good care of your lower back. Until two weeks before writing this, I could not get into the position needed to wipe my bottom, so I had to shower every time I pooped. Every movement takes me three to five times as long as it does the average person. Your lower back is important.”
Later that year, the Weekly Shonen Jump editorial team announced in December 2022 that the manga would no longer follow a weekly serialization schedule:
“Regarding the publication of HUNTER x HUNTER from Chapter 401 onward, we have discussed the matter with Mr. Togashi, taking his health and other circumstances into account. As a result, we have decided to bring the series to readers in a format other than weekly serialization.”
As the editorial team has already announced, weekly serialization has ended. Official announcements therefore refer to chapters being “published,” rather than the “resumption of serialization,” and the magazine’s closing pages do not list the series as being “on hiatus.”
