Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and the RG Project
The anime shares its universe with GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, the video game unveiled at Summer Game Fest in June 2026. A new media mix initiative spanning both titles will be developed under the name RG Project.
The RG Project is a new Gundam initiative in which the anime and game share the same universe while portraying that world from different perspectives, positions, and degrees of proximity. Together, the two works build a single history.

Taking a different approach from previous Gundam titles, director Kenji Kamiyama and SF setting supervisor Toh Enjoe have reconstructed the fundamental question of why Gundam is necessary within this world. Based on this world building, the anime and game share the same setting and history while telling their respective stories from different perspectives and distances.

The anime is set approximately 100 years before the story of the game and presents the events that form the starting point of this world.
The game, meanwhile, takes place in a world shaped by the accumulation of the events and choices depicted in the anime. Players themselves enter that history and continue making new choices.
One experience involves watching the story. The other involves entering and engaging with the world. Beginning from the present experienced by each participant, the RG Project weaves together the passage of time within a single shared world.

Story of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO
The story of Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO takes place in a world where humanity has entered an age of unprecedented prosperity following the arrival of three revelations from beyond the solar system and has expanded throughout the entire solar system.
Gravity Control. Faster than light communication. Cognitive Materialization.
However, less than ten years after its discovery, the interstellar travel capable object that brought these three revelations suddenly went out of control, producing an aggressive, self replicating ecosystem.

Humanity came to associate this unknown ecosystem with the Apocalypse.
After three months of fighting, the battle lines reached a stalemate in orbit above Earth. Humanity was forced to abandon the planet, and that year was recorded as A.A. 1, the first year After Apocalypse.
By A.A. 45, children born on the Moon and in space colonies had grown up with the existence of the Apocalypse as part of everyday life.
On the lunar surface, a boy named Ray Azumi awakens.
Kenji Kamiyama serves as director and handles series composition, while Takeo Otsuka voices protagonist Ray Azumi.

It was also announced that GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT, an entirely new action game set in the same universe, will be released for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam on March 5, 2027.
In addition, an interview with director Kenji Kamiyama conducted at SDCC, San Diego Comic Con, has been published on the official website.

Full Interview with Director Kenji Kamiyama

Kenji Kamiyama
Q: Could you introduce the new anime Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO and tell us what kind of work it is, as well as the universe that is expanding around it?
Kamiyama:
It is a story about humanity's battle against an interstellar travel capable object that arrived from beyond the solar system, later known as the Apocalypse, with the right to survive on Earth at stake. Against that backdrop, it also depicts the conflicts and growth of young boys and girls.
Q: What are your personal impressions of previous Gundam series? Could you also tell us what you see as the appeal and strengths of the franchise, as well as any particular title that is your favorite?
Kamiyama:
Gundam was the first anime in the history of Japanese animation to deliberately portray an ordinary, everyday boy as its protagonist. When the series first began airing, I was the same age as the protagonist, and I remember identifying deeply with the feelings of its characters.
It was a special work that made me realize just how rich a form of emotional expression animation could be. For that reason, the original Mobile Suit Gundam remains the defining landmark for me.

Q: How did the anime production team and game development team collaborate in building a shared universe?
Kamiyama:
At first, the game side proposed the idea of Gundam fighting enormous mecha resembling space monsters.
The anime side then developed the nature of the enemy and the structure of the war taking place in this world, and created a story based on that foundation.
In response, I believe the game side then developed the setting for the world 100 years later.
Q: The appearance of an unknown enemy from space in GUNDAM ROGUE ORBIT drew a major response from fans. Will the new anime also depict this type of conflict? If so, could you explain the intention behind adopting this setting?
Kamiyama:
Yes, it will. However, we first took the image of the enemy that had been conceived from the game's controls and gameplay and established it as a common foundation.
From there, each side selected the settings and methods best suited to its respective form of expression.
Q: How long has development of this new Gundam project been underway? When you first received the offer, what was the core element of the project that convinced you this was a story that needed to be told? Was there a particular approach or concept that immediately resonated with you?
Kamiyama:
I think I was first approached about five years ago, during the COVID pandemic.
At the time, I was also involved in several other projects as director, so it took some time before I was able to begin working on this one.
Even so, Gundam is the anime series that has influenced me more than any other. I was drawn to the opportunity to create an original series with fundamental settings that differed from anything that had come before, and I knew I absolutely wanted to direct it.

Q: Does Mobile Suit Gundam RG XARX-ZERO exist within one of the established Gundam universes and timelines, or does it establish an entirely new timeline of its own?
Kamiyama:
It has a timeline unique to this series.
However, the reason I deliberately chose a protagonist with the name Ray was that I wanted viewers to intuitively understand, without the need for complicated explanations, that even within a story and world set in an entirely new timeline, he is unmistakably the protagonist.
There will also be a character associated with the color red. I wanted viewers to intuitively understand what the color red signifies within the Gundam series as well.
