“Hypnosis Mic: The Movie” Surpasses 2 Billion Yen (approx. $13.52 million) at the Box Office - A Historic First for Films Screened in Fewer Than 100 Theaters

Hypnosis Mic -Division Rap Battle- (hereafter HypMic Movie) has surpassed ¥2 billion (approx. $13.52 million) at the box office. Revival screenings began on September 2 in 66 theaters nationwide to celebrate the 8th anniversary of the franchise, coinciding with its founding date.

First released on February 21 in 85 theaters as Japan’s first interactive film, HypMic Movie continued screenings in a limited 60–80 theaters due to equipment restrictions. While other films have expanded from small-scale releases to hundreds of theaters, HypMic Movie is the first in Japan to surpass ¥2 billion while consistently screening in under 100 theaters (according to Kogyo Tsushinsha).

The film’s rap battles are decided by audience participation through smartphone app voting, with five rounds per screening. This interactive system generates 48 possible storylines and seven different endings, making it one of the key reasons behind its strong fan support.

What Is Hypnosis Mic?

Launched in September 2017, Hypnosis Mic is a rap battle project featuring 18 unique characters split into six divisions: Ikebukuro, Yokohama, Shibuya, Shinjuku, Osaka, and Nagoya. Though unknown at its start, the first music video quickly went viral, and with high-quality tracks produced by top hip-hop artists, the project stormed the music scene.
