A brand-new anime series for the massively popular Dragon Ball franchise, titled Dragon Ball DAIMA, has been announced. The announcement was made at New York Comic Con, one of the largest pop culture events in the world, currently taking place in New York City. Masako Nozawa, the voice actress for Son Goku (age 86), also shared her thoughts on the news.

To celebrate Dragon Ball's 40th anniversary, the new anime will launch in Japan and internationally in fall 2024. Series creator Akira Toriyama and voice actress Masako Nozawa released comments regarding the new series. Toriyama wrote an entirely new story for this project, which is a completely original anime. He was deeply involved in its creation, including the story, character designs, and more, even creating new settings for vehicles, monsters, and background characters.

A teaser video was also released, and the audience at the event was thrilled. Fans applauded the announcement, and some exclaimed "Cute!!" when they saw the smaller versions of Goku and others. The excitement spread to social media as well, with comments such as "SOOO EXCITED THANK YOU!" and "I’ll go to the theater to watch this on the big screen." The term "Dragon Ball Daima" even trended globally.

Akira Toriyama’s Comment:

"We’re currently working on a new Dragon Ball series, titled Dragon Ball DAIMA. 'DAIMA' is a coined word that could be interpreted as 'Great Demon' in kanji, or 'Evil' in English. Due to a certain conspiracy, Goku and the others have been shrunk. To resolve the issue, they embark on a journey to a new world! It will be an exciting adventure filled with intense action in an unknown and mysterious realm. Goku will once again use his Power Pole (Nyoi-bō) to compensate for his small size, which might bring back some nostalgic memories. This time, I’ve put extra effort into the basic story, settings, and designs, even more than usual! The series will also delve into some of the mysteries of the Dragon Ball universe. Enjoy a slightly different, cute, yet action-packed adventure!"

Masako Nozawa’s Comment:

"The footage from the new Dragon Ball DAIMA anime was amazing! Goku looked so adorable and wonderful! I’m really curious about what conspiracy caused him to end up like that, but… the details are still a secret! I’m excited and can’t wait to enjoy the new anime along with all of you.
