Godzilla Minus One Set for Re-Release Across North America and Beyond for 70th Anniversary Celebration
On October 23, Toho announced that Godzilla Minus One (directed by Takashi Yamazaki), which won the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, will be re-released in over 800 theaters across North America starting on November 1.
The film, which first premiered in December last year, marked Toho's first-ever self-distribution in North America. It became a massive hit, achieving the highest box office revenue for a Japanese film in U.S. history and securing the third-highest box office for a foreign-language film overall. Although the film's North American run had ended by March following its Oscar win, the re-release was planned to commemorate Godzilla's 70th anniversary, with the original Godzilla film having debuted on November 3, 1954.
In addition to the North American screenings, the film will also be re-released in countries such as the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, Australia, and across Latin America, starting on October 31.
To further celebrate the 70th anniversary, the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles will host a marathon event titled "Godzilla-Thon!" featuring five iconic Godzilla films: Godzilla (1954), Destroy All Monsters (1968), Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971), the 4K remaster of Shin Godzilla (2016), and Godzilla Minus One.
