This marks the first entirely new Rose of Versailles movie in 35 years, following the 1990 film (excluding a pilot version released in 2007). In his portrayal of Louis XVI, Ochiai brings to life the young king, who marries Marie Antoinette when she arrives from Austria at 14. Despite his gentle, indecisive nature stemming from insecurities, he supports his queen with kindness and sincerity throughout their lives.

Ginga’s character, General Jarjayes, longed for a male heir but raised his youngest daughter, Oscar, as a "son" to succeed him, leading her to a life filled with unique challenges. Meanwhile, Tanaka’s Maron serves as Oscar's loyal caregiver, whom she affectionately calls “nanny.” Maron is protective and loving, especially towards Oscar and André, hoping from Oscar’s early years that she would embrace life as a woman.

The Rose of Versailles: A Tale of Love and Destiny in Revolutionary France

Set against the backdrop of the French Revolution, The Rose of Versailles tells the story of Oscar François de Jarjayes, a woman raised as a "son" and heir of a noble family, alongside her fated interactions with the innocent Queen Marie Antoinette. This timeless tale of love, duty, and fate showcases their struggle to navigate lives deeply intertwined with the tumultuous era.

Serialized in Weekly Margaret from 1972 to 1973, The Rose of Versailles achieved unprecedented success with over 20 million copies in circulation, including four new volumes released in 2014 after a 40-year hiatus.

A pioneer of media mix adaptations, The Rose of Versailles was brought to the stage by the Takarazuka Revue in 1974, adapted into a television anime in 1979, and became a cultural phenomenon in Japan. The upcoming theatrical anime, produced by MAPPA (known for Jujutsu Kaisen), promises a fresh take on this beloved classic.

Cast Comments:

Fukushi Ochiai (Louis XVI): “I first read The Rose of Versailles in elementary school during recess when a classmate lent it to me. Nostalgia washed over me as I held the script in my hands. It’s truly an honor to bring Louis XVI to life in this legendary story.”

Banjou Ginga (General Jarjayes): “I’m of nearly the same generation as The Rose of Versailles creator, Riyoko Ikeda. Although I once had no relation to this story, I’ve always felt proud of it. Now, being involved in this film, I feel incredibly proud. I must say—it's all my fault, Oscar… forgive me!”

Mayumi Tanaka (Maron Glacé Montblanc): “Maron, who probably did all that laundry for Rascal [a reference to her character in Rascal the Raccoon]… Wait, it’s for Oscar this time! It’s a rare role as a female character for me, so please look forward to it!”
