Moana 2 Breaks ¥964 Million ($6.43 Million) Box Office in 3 Days, Becomes 2024's Top Foreign Film in Japan
Disney’s animated film Moana 2 has taken the Japanese box office by storm, earning ¥964 million (approx. $6.43 million) and topping both revenue and attendance rankings in its first three days since its December 6 release. Including pre-screenings on December 5, the film has drawn 697,000 viewers, marking a spectacular start.
This sequel surpasses the ¥716.4 million ($4.78 million) opening weekend of its predecessor, Moana, and closely trails the ¥986 million ($6.57 million) debut of Disney’s Frozen, which became a cultural phenomenon. Moana 2 now boasts the third-highest opening weekend for a Disney animated film in Japan and is on track to reach a projected ¥7 billion ($46.67 million) in total box office revenue, securing its place as the top-performing foreign film of 2024 in Japan so far.
Global Success
Prior to its release in Japan, Moana 2 opened in the U.S. on November 27, where it shattered five-day box office records with the highest-ever earnings for a film during that timeframe. Its global box office has already surpassed $600 million (approx. ¥90 billion), solidifying its status as a worldwide hit.
Universal Appeal
The film enchants audiences with stunning ocean visuals, unforgettable songs, and a heartfelt story about friendship and courage. Theaters have seen a diverse audience, from teens and young adults who relate to Moana’s journey as a 19-year-old protagonist, to families, couples, and adults in their 30s and beyond.

For its second week in Japan, moviegoers will receive a “Moana Charge Smartphone Sticker”, bringing a touch of Moana’s world to their daily lives (available while supplies last). Details of third-week gifts will be announced soon.
Additionally, attention is turning to the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, where the film is expected to earn nominations. The announcements will take place later tonight (December 9, Japan time).
