Neo-Atom to Premiere at Osaka Expo 2025 – Special Short Film Showcasing Astro Boy’s Rebirth by Black Jack

On March 19, a press conference in Tokyo announced the introduction of Neo-Atom, a newly reborn version of Astro Boy, as the official navigator for the PASONA NATUREVERSE Pavilion at Osaka Expo 2025. This new character is inspired by the 1972 manga Atom Returns and is produced by Tezuka Productions.

The Story of Neo-Atom: A Life with a Limited Lifespan

Unlike the original Astro Boy, Neo-Atom possesses an iPS heart made from human cells, giving him a finite lifespan. This unique aspect allows him to experience and appreciate the value of life as deeply as humans—or even more so.

At the pavilion, a special short film titled Neo-Atom’s Birth will be screened, featuring music composed by Akira Senju and narration by Ayaka Hirahara. The film is set to immerse visitors in the world of NATUREVERSE through stunning full 3D animation.

A New Chapter for Astro Boy: The Birth of Neo-Atom

The short film tells a completely original story crafted by Tezuka Productions:

In the early 21st century, a space colony faces a catastrophic malfunction, heading straight toward the sun due to an AI system failure. Astro Boy bravely sacrifices himself to halt the colony’s course and save humanity. His body, unable to withstand the explosion, is lost in space.

Centuries later, in the 22nd century, Astro Boy’s body is discovered drifting in space. Thanks to advancements in medical and scientific technology, the legendary Black Jack revives him using an iPS heart, leading to the birth of Neo-Atom.

Neo-Atom’s Characteristics

Height: 155 cm
Weight: 48 kg
Abilities: Comparable to a 12-year-old human child in physical capability, but with mechanical parts throughout his body.
Lifespan: Due to his iPS heart, Neo-Atom has a limited lifespan. Once his time ends, his mechanical parts will biodegrade and return to the earth, symbolizing the harmony between technology, humanity, and nature—a core theme of NATUREVERSE.

Director and Composer Speak on the Project

Director Satoshi Kuwabara reflected on the environmental themes of the film:
"We humans are only one of many life forms inhabiting Earth. However, our selfishness has pushed the planet and all its inhabitants toward crisis. This film portrays Astro Boy standing alone against this man-made disaster. The message left by Osamu Tezuka is one we must not forget: The future of Earth is in our hands, and only we can change it."

Composer Akira Senju, who grew up watching Astro Boy, shared his excitement:
"This project holds immense significance for me. The Astro Boy I saw as a child became a guiding force in my life. Now, after 60 years of admiration, I am honored to compose the music for the rebirth of Neo-Atom."
