“Gundam for Peace” Pavilion at Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 Aims to Redefine the Future—Not Built for War, but for Hope

— That’s quite a bold creative direction.

Momoi: Traditional Gundam stories usually center on war, so showing characters working together emphasizes peace all the more—and creates a compelling contrast. We wanted to remove the beam sabers from the mobile suits, if you will. Still, we had to ensure the pavilion would be fun and engaging for Gundam fans, while also aligning with the Expo’s peaceful vision.

— How did you strike that balance?

Momoi: That’s one of the highlights of GUNDAM: Next Universal Century. If it were simply 60 minutes of peace, it wouldn’t feel like Gundam. But if it were too violent, it would go against the Expo’s theme. We struggled with this tension, but I believe we found a fine line that satisfies both sides. It’s an ambitious piece, and we hope people enjoy it.

◆ 46 Years of Gundam—Why It Remains a Global Icon

— Gundam launched in 1979. What do you think has kept it so popular for 46 years?

Momoi: Producer Naohiro Ogata from Bandai Namco Filmworks always says, “We want to show a new Gundam every time.” I think that’s the key. From the original Mobile Suit Gundam, we’ve consistently introduced new Gundams with each iteration.

Viewers who’ve watched The Witch from Mercury or Gundam GQuuuuuuX often say they now want to revisit the original First Gundam. I believe that continuity—presenting the series as a grand historical tapestry—is what keeps it fresh.

And of course, Gunpla (Gundam plastic models) have played a big role too. They’re incredibly popular overseas. Building what you saw in the anime with your own hands deepens the emotional connection to the characters. That sense of affinity is a huge part of the appeal.

— The pavilion is among the most anticipated at the Expo. What went into its concept and design?

Momoi: Even the construction helmets used during Expo setup were customized with Gundam, Char’s Zaku, and Dom designs. They were so well received that people were excited to wear them. Workers in teams of three tended to wear the Dom design—perhaps channeling the Black Tri-Stars! (laughs)

— The life-size Gundam in a kneeling pose raised quite a stir.

Momoi: That was a tough call. The story involves the Gundam traveling from Earth to Jaburo and back. So the pose shows the Gundam after completing a mission, looking toward space with a wish for peace.

We also made a first by placing the full-scale Gundam in a natural setting with plants and greenery, which gives it a very different visual impression than previous displays.
