The Tragedy and Awakening of Nezuko
At the very beginning of the story, Tanjiro Kamado returns home from selling charcoal to find his entire family massacred by Muzan Kibutsuji. The only survivor is his sister, Nezuko, who has been transformed into a demon. Driven by instinct, she attacks Tanjiro—but just as she is about to kill him, memories of their time together resurface, causing her to stop.

Giyu Tomioka, a Demon Slayer who arrives on the scene, initially tries to slay Nezuko. However, witnessing Tanjiro’s desperate attempt to protect his sister and Nezuko’s own effort to shield Tanjiro from him, Giyu senses something exceptional in them both. He decides to send the siblings to Sakonji Urokodaki for further guidance.

The Long Slumber and Hypnotic Suggestion
Under Urokodaki’s care, Nezuko enters a deep sleep that lasts for approximately two years—throughout the time Tanjiro trains for the Final Selection. During her slumber, Urokodaki places a powerful hypnotic suggestion in her subconscious:

“Humans are your family. Protect them. You may be a demon, but you must never harm a human.”

This suggestion, paired with her own inner strength, becomes the foundation of Nezuko’s resistance to her demonic instincts.

The Swamp Demon Encounter
Upon awakening, Nezuko accompanies Tanjiro on his first mission—to investigate the disappearance of several girls. They face the Swamp Demon, and Nezuko demonstrates her combat abilities for the first time, using her exceptional leg strength and demonic physical prowess to assist Tanjiro. At this point, however, her full power remains untapped.

The Battle in Asakusa and Meeting Tamayo
During their mission in Asakusa, Tanjiro and Nezuko have a shocking encounter with Muzan Kibutsuji. Amid the chaos, a human turned demon by Muzan's blood goes on a rampage. Nezuko fights the demon to protect the civilians, leading to her first meeting with Tamayo, a doctor and former demon of the Demon Slayer Corps. Fascinated by Nezuko’s unique traits, Tamayo vows to help develop a cure to return her to human form.

The Battle with Rui and the Awakening of “Exploding Blood”
On Mount Natagumo, Nezuko joins Tanjiro and his allies in a fierce battle against Rui, a member of the Twelve Kizuki's Lower Ranks. To protect her brother, Nezuko awakens her Blood Demon Art: Exploding Blood (爆血) for the first time. Her blood ignites and burns through Rui’s razor-sharp threads, working in sync with Tanjiro’s Dance of the Fire God to corner the powerful demon.

This moment marks Nezuko’s emergence as a full-fledged combatant, capable of using her demonic abilities with intent and control.

Recognition at the Hashira Meeting
After the battle at Mount Natagumo, Nezuko and Tanjiro are brought to the Hashira Meeting, where the highest-ranking members of the Demon Slayer Corps debate her fate. As a demon, Nezuko faces potential execution. However, thanks to the intervention of Kagaya Ubuyashiki, the Corps’ leader, she is given a test to prove her will.

With the support of Kyojuro Rengoku and Shinobu Kocho, who believe in Tanjiro’s and Nezuko’s sincerity, she passes the test by refusing to attack even when wounded and exposed to human blood. As a result, Nezuko is granted exceptional permission to travel with Tanjiro and is formally recognized—albeit conditionally—by the Demon Slayer Corps.

Kagaya refers to her as "the child of my benefactor," signifying the special status she holds within the organization.
