On August 22, the official X account for the anime Dandadan released a statement apologizing for a controversy involving a track featured in Episode 18. The song “Hunting Soul” sparked reactions due to its perceived resemblance to music by X JAPAN. The production team expressed regret over insufficient prior communication with YOSHIKI and stated that they are now engaged in discussions with the artist regarding the matter.

Production Team Issues Apology Over “Hunting Soul”

The anime’s production committee addressed the issue through a formal statement posted on X, apologizing for the concerns caused by the track “Hunting Soul” used in Episode 18. The creators explained that the song was produced with inspiration drawn from YOSHIKI and X JAPAN, aiming to capture their energy and passion in the anime's musical direction. They stated the intent was to enhance the quality of the show’s storytelling and scenes.

Lack of Prior Communication With YOSHIKI Acknowledged

The statement acknowledged that the team had failed to provide prior explanation to YOSHIKI and X JAPAN, which led to unintended concern. They expressed sincere regret for the oversight and confirmed that discussions regarding rights and permissions are ongoing with all relevant parties. The production team added that they have already spoken with YOSHIKI and are exploring potential creative collaborations moving forward.

Details About the Track and Online Reactions

“Hunting Soul” is a high-tempo rock track performed by the character HAYASii in Episode 18. It was written, composed, and arranged by Seiichi Nagai, with production by Kensuke Ushio. Vocals were provided by Kishō Taniyama, featuring guitar by Marty Friedman, drums by Chargeeeeee…, and bass by Wakazaemon. A lyric video was also released, with the official site noting that the track was produced with considerable enthusiasm.


YOSHIKI Reacts to the Controversy on Social Media

Following the episode's release, YOSHIKI took to X and questioned the similarity, asking fans, “Doesn’t this sound like X JAPAN?” He expressed surprise, stating he had no prior knowledge of the song’s production and received urgent messages from his team. While initially amused, YOSHIKI later revealed that his lawyers had contacted him over potential copyright concerns, advising others to communicate with rights holders in advance.

We would like to express our deepest apologies for the concern caused regarding the song “Hunting Soul” featured in the Dandadan TV anime.

This song was created with the intention of expressing, within the anime, the kind of passion embodied by Mr. YOSHIKI and X JAPAN—whom our production team holds in the highest regard. In terms of musical direction, it was also produced with the aim of matching the story and scenes of the Dandadan anime and enhancing the overall quality of the work.

However, in this instance, we failed to provide Mr. YOSHIKI and X JAPAN with an explanation in advance. This was never our intention, and we sincerely apologize for the concern it has caused. Regarding rights-related matters, we are currently engaged in constructive discussions with the relevant parties.

We have already spoken directly with Mr. YOSHIKI about this matter, and we are using this opportunity to explore potential creative collaborations for the future.
