Manga Artist Masashi Ueda’s Three Long Running Series to End, Publishers Announce Conclusion of Otoboke Bucho Dairi, Kariage Kun, and Shin Furiten Kun

It was announced on July 7 that the serialized works Otoboke Bucho Dairi, Kariage Kun, and Shin Furiten Kun by manga artist Masashi Ueda, 79, will end their runs. Hobunsha, Futabasha, and Takeshobo each made announcements, jointly stating, “We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Masashi Ueda for bringing us the finest laughter for so many years. We also extend our thanks to all readers who have loved and warmly supported these works. Thank you. From all of the editorial departments.”

Manga Artist Masashi Ueda’s Three Long Running Series to End


The series ending are Otoboke Bucho Dairi, currently serialized in Manga Time, in the issue released on July 7, Kariage Kun, currently serialized in Manga Action, in the issue released on July 7, and Shin Furiten Kun, currently serialized in Manga Life Original, in the issue released on July 10. The announcement was made suddenly in the issue of Manga Time released today.


Otoboke Bucho Dairi has been serialized since 1981, beginning with its previous work. Kariage Kun has been serialized since 1980, and Shin Furiten Kun has been serialized since 1979, beginning with its previous work. All three have continued for more than 40 years while changing the magazines in which they appeared.

Hobunsha expressed its gratitude on the magazine cover, writing, “Thank you for your hard work, Otoboke father, who served for 45 years as section chief and acting department manager since the launch of Manga Time,” and “Thank you for 45 years of serialization since the magazine’s launch.”

Ueda, now 79, had placed his representative work Kobo chan on hiatus for a period beginning in June 2022. When the series resumed in March 2023, The Yomiuri Shimbun explained that “the author, Masashi Ueda, had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was focusing on treatment.”

Meanwhile, his representative work Kobo chan remains serialized in The Yomiuri Shimbun. The Manga Time editorial department wrote on its official X account, “Masashi Ueda’s comic Shin Kobo chan Volume 61 goes on sale today, July 7. Future volumes of Shin Kobo chan will continue to be published by Hobunsha, so we hope for your continued support. The series also remains highly popular in the morning edition of The Yomiuri Shimbun.”

Regarding the end of the three series, Ueda provided a handwritten message with an illustration of his characters, saying, “Thank you for everything over all these years!!”
