The original manga, which was published in Hana to Yume magazine from 1996 to 2004, follows the main character Mizuki Ashiya. She disguises herself as a boy so she can transfer into an all-boys boarding school. There, she hopes to meet her idol, high jumper Izumi Sano. She ends up sharing a dorm room with Sano, and this leads to a story full of excitement and danger in school life.

The manga series has been printed more than 17 million times. It was previously adapted into live-action dramas in 2007 and 2011. In 2007, Maki Horikita, Shun Oguri, Toma Ikuta, and Hiro Mizushima starred in the drama. In 2011, Atsuko Maeda, Aoi Nakamura, and Shohei Miura starred in the drama. Both dramas generated significant buzz.

Nakajo-sensei was excited to see how the world of Hana-Kimi would be expressed differently from the manga through character designs and scripts. We're sorry we couldn't show her the finished version, but thanks to the fans, Hana-Kimi is coming back as an anime. This is happening 20 years after the last one. We are working closely with the production team to meet the expectations of Nakajo-sensei and the readers, so please look forward to the broadcast."
