This sequel to "Inside Out" (2015) is set in the world of emotions that exist within everyone. It tells the story of Riley, who faces new challenges as she grows up and experiences a wider range of emotions.
Since childhood, Riley's happiness has been safeguarded by her core emotions—Joy, Sadness, Disgust, Fear, and Anger—working together as a team. Now, new "adult emotions"—Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui—have arrived, causing a big upheaval.
In the released dubbed scene, Anxiety explains that her role is to "protect from unseen threats and plan for the future." When Anxiety operates the control desk in the mind's headquarters, data predicting future scenarios for Riley, based on past experiences, appears on the monitor.

Anxiety predicts a worst-case future for Riley: being disliked by a senior she admires, failing to join the hockey team she aimed for, being friendless at her new high school, and only her teacher knowing her name.
Carrying such anxiety, Riley becomes worried about her future, leading to misunderstandings with her best friend and awkward interactions with a senior she admires at her new high school. She also becomes upset from comparing herself to others, engulfed in a storm of emotions.

Mikako Tabe, who plays Anxiety in the Japanese dubbed version, has been praised by the film's director Pete Docter, who recently visited Japan and said, "Fantastic! Truly amazing! It was wonderful!" The film, already a massive hit worldwide, has been praised for focusing on the emotion of "Anxiety," a point highlighted by many overseas media, including TIME magazine.
Each emotion in the film has a specific role: Joy makes Riley feel positive and happy, Sadness empathizes with her sadness, and Fear protects her from danger. Anxiety is a universal emotion that transcends borders and generations, and how to deal with it is an eternal theme that troubles everyone.
Director Kelsey Mann, who helmed this film, explains, "The emotion of 'Anxiety' can be helpful at times. For example, feeling anxious about an important interview can prompt you to iron your clothes and prepare properly. However, if anxiety becomes too overwhelming, it can take over your mind."
He further adds, "This film is about accepting yourself, including your flaws, and loving yourself. To be loved, you don't need to be perfect."
