The announcement was made in writing via the official X (formerly Twitter) account of the serializing magazine 'Jump SQ.', stating, "Thank you for your continued support of 'Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story - Hokkaido Arc.' Due to the health issues of author Nobuhiro Watsuki, 'Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story - Hokkaido Arc' will be on hiatus for a while."

"Since the June 2024 issue, we have been taking consecutive breaks and exploring a writing system aimed at monthly publication. However, after discussions between the editorial department and Mr. Watsuki, we have decided to let him take a certain period of rest so that he can continue the series in perfect condition," they conveyed.

"We will announce the resumption timing in future issues of 'Jump SQ.' and through the official 'Jump SQ.' account. We sincerely apologize to all readers who have been looking forward to it," they apologized.

'Rurouni Kenshin', serialized in 'Weekly Shonen Jump' from 1994 to 1999, is a popular work that has surpassed 72 million copies in the series. The story depicts the protagonist Kenshin Himura, a legendary swordsman feared as 'Hitokiri Battousai' during the Bakumatsu period, who after the Meiji Restoration takes an oath of 'no killing' and, with his reverse-blade sword that cannot kill people, helps others along with his companions.

Although it concluded in 1999, since 2017, the sequel 'Hokkaido Arc' has been serialized in 'Jump Square'. It was first adapted into a TV anime in 1996, a movie version was released in 1997, three OVAs were released after 1999, and it was also adapted into a live-action film starring actor Takeru Satoh. Loved as a monumental work of action period drama, the second season of the new TV anime will be broadcast from October.
