“The Boy and the Heron” Exhibit at Ghibli Museum Showcases Hand-Drawn Background Art Starting Nov 23
The special exhibition “The Boy and the Heron” at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo, which has been held since last year, will begin its third phase focusing on hand-drawn background art created during the production process starting November 23.
The Ghibli Museum’s special exhibition “The Boy and the Heron” – Background Art Edition, Part 3, runs from November 23 (C) 2023 Hayao Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli
This is the final installment of the three-part exhibition featuring hand-drawn artwork for the feature-length animation The Boy and the Heron (2023). In recent years, digital tools have become widely used in background art, making duplication, editing, and correction easier. However, it is incredibly difficult to completely recreate a hand-drawn piece painted with traditional materials. While pencil drawings can be corrected with an eraser, once the base coat is applied, it cannot be easily undone. Considering these factors, one realizes the irreplaceable uniqueness of background art within the animation process.

Director Hayao Miyazaki has often remarked, “The dignity of an animated film is determined by its background art,” emphasizing the profound impact that background paintings have on the impression of the work. Without the power of background art, the beautiful and rich visuals of the film would not exist.
The background art for The Boy and the Heron was created by a small team of art staff. Enjoy the fusion of craftsmanship, paper, paint, and water that brings forth a world of light, shadow, and rich hues—the crystallization of the skills and artistry behind hand-drawn background art. The third phase, "Background Art Edition," will extend its duration from the initially planned six months to a full year, with some displays being swapped between the first half (November 23, 2024 – May 2025) and the second half (May 2025 – November 2025).
The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka operates on a reservation-only, time-designated entry system. Tickets for November entry will be available starting October 10 via Lawson Ticket (tickets are released on the 10th of each month).
