Like a Dragon: Beyond the Game reimagines the story of Kazuma Kiryu (Ryoma Takeuchi) in Kamurocho, a lively entertainment district modeled after Tokyo’s Kabukicho. The crime action series follows Kiryu as he grows from a young man inspired by “the Dragon of Dojima” into a prominent figure in the gritty underworld. The plot explores the mysterious whereabouts of a missing 10 billion yen and the mounting tension within Kamurocho’s criminal network.

Dual Timelines Reveal Kiryu's Dark Past and Present Struggles

Episodes 1 through 3 introduce Kiryu and his close friends — Nishiki (Kento Kaku), Yumi (Yumi Kawai), and Miho (Hinano Nakayama) — who grew up together in an orphanage called Sunflower. As they strive to break free from their restrictive lives, they trigger a life-altering confrontation after attacking an arcade, unintentionally drawing the wrath of the Dojima family, a powerful yakuza group controlling Kamurocho. Shintaro Kazama (Toshiaki Karasawa), a father figure who runs Sunflower, dreams of a lawful future for them. However, the four friends are quickly entangled in the yakuza world, where their lives spiral into crime.

Set in two parallel timelines, 1995 and 2005, the story pivots from their early years to Kiryu’s release from prison in 2005, where he faces the consequences of his “parental murder” crime after a decade behind bars. Kiryu returns to a transformed Kamurocho, now dominated by Nishiki, who has risen as the Dojima family leader. Together with Yumi and their “family,” Kiryu finds himself entangled in a large-scale yakuza feud.

The recently released trailer previews the action-packed finale, revealing Kiryu’s return to Kamurocho to protect his “family” and confront the escalating conflict. In the 1995 scenes, viewers witness Kiryu’s relentless ambition to become the Dragon of Dojima, fighting through underground arenas. Meanwhile, friends-turned-family drift down separate paths as tension mounts. The shocking, hidden event from ten years prior that fractured their family remains a mystery: what led to their separation, and who is the “Demon of Shinjuku” connected to Nishiki’s dark ties?
