YOSHIKI Addresses the Dandadan Music Issue

The controversy began after Episode 18 of the anime Dandadan featured the track Hunting Soul, which drew comparisons to X JAPAN’s music. YOSHIKI initially expressed confusion on X, questioning the resemblance and noting he had not been informed in advance. While he said he first laughed at the situation, he later received legal advice suggesting possible copyright concerns. YOSHIKI deleted his posts on August 18, stating he would leave the matter to the relevant parties.

Official Apology From Dandadan Production

During the same day as the press conference, the anime’s official X account released a statement apologizing for the incident. The production committee explained that Hunting Soul was created with respect for YOSHIKI and X JAPAN, aiming to capture their passion and enhance the anime’s story. They admitted failing to provide prior explanation and confirmed that constructive discussions about rights are underway, adding that talks with YOSHIKI had already taken place.

YOSHIKI: “A Positive and Constructive Conversation”

Speaking to reporters after the press conference, YOSHIKI shared his perspective: “I was surprised and maybe not very careful when I first posted, but afterwards I received a call from the producer and we had a very positive conversation. It was an honor to have my work used, and it became a valuable learning experience.” He noted that creative rights often involve many stakeholders, and he prefers to entrust such matters to them while focusing on his artistry.

Full Statement from Dandadan Production Committee

We would like to express our deepest apologies for the concern caused regarding the song “Hunting Soul” featured in the Dandadan TV anime.

This song was created with the intention of expressing, within the anime, the kind of passion embodied by Mr. YOSHIKI and X JAPAN—whom our production team holds in the highest regard. In terms of musical direction, it was also produced with the aim of matching the story and scenes of the Dandadan anime and enhancing the overall quality of the work.

However, in this instance, we failed to provide Mr. YOSHIKI and X JAPAN with an explanation in advance. This was never our intention, and we sincerely apologize for the concern it has caused. Regarding rights-related matters, we are currently engaged in constructive discussions with the relevant parties.

We have already spoken directly with Mr. YOSHIKI about this matter, and we are using this opportunity to explore potential creative collaborations for the future.

To Mr. YOSHIKI, X JAPAN, all their fans, and to Dandadan fans and everyone involved, we once again extend our heartfelt apologies for the concern this has caused. We kindly ask for your continued support and understanding for this series going forward.

Saudi Arabia Concert Announcement

The main purpose of the Tokyo press conference was to unveil YOSHIKI’s upcoming concert in Saudi Arabia. On November 20, he will perform at the UNESCO World Heritage site Hegra in AlUla as part of the Ancient Kingdoms Festival “Hegra Candlelit Classics” series. The prestigious stage has previously featured artists such as Andrea Bocelli and Ludovico Einaudi. YOSHIKI will be the first Japanese artist to appear in this series, performing against the backdrop of ancient Nabataean tombs illuminated by thousands of candles.

Recognition of YOSHIKI’s Global Achievements

YOSHIKI’s invitation to Saudi Arabia follows international recognition of his unique fusion of rock and classical music. In 2025, he is set to be named to TIME magazine’s “TIME100” list and will become the first Japanese artist to leave handprints and footprints at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theatre. At the press conference, YOSHIKI expressed gratitude for the honor, calling the opportunity “deeply meaningful” as fans cheered during the announcement.
