Gamera 60th Anniversary Project Launches with Heisei Trilogy Returning in Dolby Cinema
First released in 1965 with Gamera: The Giant Monster, the kaiju franchise has spanned eight Showa-era films, four Heisei installments, and even an anime in 2023. Now celebrating its 60th anniversary, the Gamera 60th Anniversary Project officially begins. Following the announcement of the Showa Gamera Film Festival, the second initiative brings the Heisei Trilogy back to theaters in Dolby Cinema with 4K HDR restoration.

4K HDR Dolby Cinema Restoration
Supervised by cinematographers Hiroshi Kitokoro (Guardian of the Universe, Attack of Legion) and Satoshi Murakawa (Revenge of Iris), the films were regraded using HDR imaging technology. This restoration enhances detail such as deep blacks and the luminous quality of fireballs, drawing out the full potential of the original negatives. New anniversary poster visuals were also revealed to mark the screenings.

Director Shusuke Kaneko’s Reflections
In a statement, Kaneko praised the Dolby Cinema experience, noting that the visuals felt clearer than ever and the sound invited audiences into a fantasy world. He recalled the excitement of shooting on Himegami Island, the thrill of special effects sequences, and the powerful music composed by Kow Otani. Reflecting on the collaborative energy of the production, he encouraged Gamera to “roar again” across eras from Showa to Reiwa.
