Kazuya Nakai Cast as Shakkū in Rurouni Kenshin: "A Life Lived Clumsily Is Captivating"
The second season of the Rurouni Kenshin TV anime, titled Rurouni Kenshin - Meiji Swordsman Romantic Story: Kyoto Inferno, has revealed additional cast members. Kazuya Nakai, known for voicing Zoro in One Piece, will play the role of Arai Shakkū.
Arai Shakkū's Role and New Scene Revealed
In a flashback sequence following Kenshin’s victory over Cho, a member of the Ten Swords (voiced by Nobuhiko Okamoto), Shakkū is the man who hands Kenshin the sakabatō (reverse-blade sword). This pivotal moment reflects Kenshin’s transition from his days as a feared assassin, Hitokiri Battosai. Alongside the announcement, a new still featuring Kenshin and Shakkū under a crimson sky has been released, along with comments from Nakai.
About the New TV Anime
The latest Rurouni Kenshin anime, which began airing in July 2023, is a complete reimagining of the series using the latest animation technology. Supervised entirely by original creator Nobuhiro Watsuki, the anime faithfully reconstructs the story from episode one with updated character designs and scenarios. With a new cast and crew, this project brings Rurouni Kenshin back to life nearly 30 years after the manga's debut.
The second season follows Kenshin Himura as he leaves behind his peaceful days at the Kamiya Dojo to face his greatest challenge yet: the confrontation with Makoto Shishio.
Kazuya Nakai's Comments
“Although Shakkū only appears in a flashback, the words he leaves with Kenshin carry layers of meaning and make for an incredibly impactful scene. Amid the chaos of the Bakumatsu era, he continued crafting tools of death while harboring his own deep, unresolved feelings. In a way, his clumsy, straightforward way of life is what makes him so compelling. I hope viewers will find his true intentions hidden within his blunt words.”
